FROM ESSEX TO HOLLYWOOD: In this Q + A masterclass, EIFF Director, Charles Sharman-Cox talks to award winning drama and documentary director Andrew Douglas about his early career as a stills photographer to directing the last ‘Amityville Horror’ movie for 20th Century Fox and more.

Andrew Douglas began his career as an assistant to the internationally acclaimed photographer Snowdon (Antony Armstrong-Jones). He was a magazine photographer for Esquire and The Face and then, in partnership with his brother Stuart, made music videos and commercials as ‘The Douglas Brothers’. His 2003 documentary, ‘Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus’ won a Royal Television Society award. In 2005 Andrew made his Hollywood movie debut with ‘The Amityville Horror’ the terrifying remake of the 1970s horror classic. In 2013 he produced and directed ‘Uwantme2killhim’ which was nominated for the Michael Powell Award for Best British Feature Film. More recently he completed a documentary, again, with his brother Stuart, about the Brazilian international footballer Ronaldinho ‘The Happiest Man in the World’. This was followed by ‘Stroke of Genius’ concerning the tennis rivalry between Roger Federer and Raphael Nadal, a documentary which was nominated for a Sports Emmy Award.

Whether you’re just starting out or seeking to take the next leap in your career, we hope that Andrew’s story will inspire you to keep pushing knowing that it is possible to get from Essex to Hollywood and have a successful career in the film industry.
